Armed Offenders Squads (AOS) were first established in 1964, after the fatal shooting of four police officers in incidents in Lower Hutt and Waitakere. There are now 17 squads, covering all main centres.
NZ Police is essentially an unarmed service, and there is determination both within Police and in the public to keep it that way. But the AOS provides Police with the means of effectively and more safely responding to and resolving situations in which there is an actual or threatened use of firearms or other weapons against members of the public or Police.
The basic methods of operating have not changed - that is to cordon, contain and appeal to armed offenders.
These tactics are successful in the vast majority of incidents, which are resolved without the use of force. The AOS is also used for some pre-planned operations where there is a high risk, for example large cash escorts, or assisting other Police with search warrants.
The squads are supported by negotiation teams and specially trained police dogs and handlers.
AOS members are all volunteers. They must qualify at a rigorous national selection and induction course, and receive regular additional training in their districts. They are part-time, drawn from all branches of the Police, and operate on a call-out basis.
and the DPS
The Diplomatic Protection Squad (DPS) provides personal protection in New Zealand for visiting guests of Government (such as visiting Royalty and the Prime Ministers and Presidents of other countries).
The squad is also responsible for the protection for our own dignitaries (for example the Governor-General, the Prime Minister and Ministers of the Crown) both in New Zealand and overseas.
The Diplomatic Protection Squad (DPS) was formed in the mid 1970's after a number of terrorist incidents overseas.
It was established by the New Zealand Police to meet New Zealand's obligations under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic and Consular Relations, which deals with the safety and security of foreign diplomats.
Because a majority of Diplomatic Missions are based in Wellington the Diplomatic Protection Squad is also based in Wellington but has New Zealand wide responsibility.
Officers on the squad are assigned a variety of duties, some in Police uniform however a majority of deployments are in plain clothes.
Squad members are selected from experienced Police officers who show an above average ability in driving, use of firearms and who have passed the DPS course at the Royal New Zealand Police College.
This course teaches officers how to deal with diplomats and other dignitaries.
They are taught about diplomatic immunity, protection techniques, advanced driving, advanced firearm training and unarmed combat
then the STG modeled after the nzsas for counter terrorist roles since the nzsas cannot operate with in country mostly made up od ex sas troopers, soldiers and aos groups
Special Tactics Groups (STG) The STG provides a ‘tactical capability’ ie; the management of a situation. They also deals with armed incidents beyond the capability of the Armed Offender Squads, and provides protection to high risk persons. STG staff also collect information about criminal activities.
